you can let NERO do the job .. just drag&drop the divx video into NERO and choose "create video dvd"

When I used Nero the only option for DivX was video CD. Has that changed?

Hi , I downloaded mediacoder, don't really understand how to use it. Stanley has not given me sign in confiirmation yet, so I can't ask any questions yet. Also I have nero 7 ultra and cannot find anything to make your own dvd either.

OK, I'll guide you through the process

1st. click on the Nero StartSmart icon and
choose from the top pulldown menu DVD so that Nero knows that you would like to create a DVD

2nd. choose photo and video
from there create own Video-DVD

after that you can add your video file(s) and nero will do the rest for you

If you don't already have MediaCoder, get it here:
http://mediacoder.sourceforge.net/

Create a temporary folder for you media output, say C:\temp.

Install and launch MediaCoder. Open your AVI file.

Go to the Devices menu -> Plugins -> Disc Player. On the right is the target format.

Under Output, browse to your temp folder.

On the left side, under Type, choose "NTSC" for the US, "PAL" elsewhere.

Under Aspect Ratio, Choose 4:3 for full screen, 16:9 for wide screen.

Click Start. This can take a while, so go get a cup of coffee.

You now have a DVD-compliant MPEG2 movie. You will need to split this into smaller (1GB) .vob files. Unfourtunately, this is not supported yet in MediaCoder. I haven't used Windows in a while, but if somone else could recommend something for this task, that would be great.

You will also need to create the corresponding ifo files. IFOEdit is good for this. You can download it and find instructions at

http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/mpg/ifoedit-basic.htm

I hope this helps.

Thanks for all the input about this conversion business, but I'm seriously thinking of just spending the $40 and getting a Divx compliant DVD player and donating my old one to charity. Although it's been fun trying to convert, although without any luck. There is also another decoder that I tried ,dvdflick.net, but that conversion to mpeg would not play either. I give up ,almost anyway.

Very puzzling here ... I have followed the same procedures that k-otic is describing for making a DVD from a DivX file (and many others as well over the years) and have made hundreds of excellent quality DVDs (and backup disc images for each on portable archiving hard drives ... if I go to the trouble to make a disc of any type I almost always make a backup disc image during the process). I also have several different DivX compliant DVD players but much prefer the quality of the non-DivX DVD discs that Nero produces utilizing the procedure that k-otic details with a Divx file as the source. I have had a minimal amount of problems utilizing that very procedure.

The easiest thing i've found is ConvertXtoDvd. Step 1 add file, step 2 click convert. There is a trial version.
http://www.vso-software.fr/products/convert_x_to_dvd/
and heres a guide.
http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/vso_convertxtodvd_guide.cfm
it converts/shrinks if needed/and burns or leave in a video ts folder.
It creats a simple menu so you can add many video's and have them play one at a time or one after the other. It's really one of my favorite programs.

Sorry but nowhere under photo and video in my nero 7 does it say" make own dvd video". Could it be that I have something not installed from my nero 7 software? But other than that I give up. Thanks for your help though.

I ran into that too, Fonsi. I think it's because the Nero I had that came with my DVD burner was a demo (the cheapskates!). I did find a freeware one that I can send you a link to when I get home. (My computer is resurrected, praise be!) I can't recall the name of it, but it seems to work fairly well.

Thanks, But....I had not installed Nero vision which allows you to make your own dvd. Now all the components are in my Nero because I had done a custom install originally and chose to leave out Nero vision.
The real problem now as I stated is that the dvd files that nero creates from Divx to Mpeg 2 is still not playable or recognized by my dvd player..............

Must be a new feature. It wasn't available in Nero 5.

I have Nero 7 and while it will make DVDs out of AVIs, the quality is wretched. It does all right with MPGs, but AVIs aren't worth the hassle.

I was hoping Media Coder would be my solution, but before I got a chance to test it, my hard drive got fried in a thunderstorm. :(

Meanwhile, I use a Mac at work, and I've found I can take a Divx AVI, run it through Divx Doctor (which is freeware) and then import the resulting MOV into iDVD. So far that's worked really well.
